Back in 2014, I shared a review of the Artist Shadows that Make Up For Ever had just come out with after previewing them at an event. Fast forward four years later, Make Up For Ever has replaced these with the Artist Color Shadows* (C$22 / US$17 each, 2.5g or 0.08 oz), a new line which includes 121 shades, similarly named according to five different finishes: Diamond (D), Matte (M), Metallic (ME), Satin (S) and Iridescent (I). You can purchase these pan refills individually to create you own palette. The main visual difference is that the new pans are rectangular as opposed to circular to go with their Artist Color Refillable Makeup Palette magnetic system, which also works with their highlight, sculpt and blush powders. I was personally a fan of the previous formula, so I was curious to see how the new-and-improved version would compare.
I received nine of the Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadows as well as their new Step 1 Skin Equalizer Eye & Lip Primer* (C$29 / US$23, 10 mL or 0.33 oz). I previously tried their Step 1 Skin Equalizer Radiant Primer and had never come across a hybrid eye and lip primer - intriguing to say the least! The Artist Color Shadows are said to have up to 12 hour wear and be easily blendable. After playing with these over the last few weeks, I can advocate for their great pigmentation and workability. Despite being powders, they glide on smoothly, and have practically no powder kickback when picking up with a brush. As you can see in my latest Get Ready With Me, I used five shades to create a copper rose eye look and had no issues with product or shimmer fallout.
Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadows featured:
- M-500 - Ivory (matte cream)
- M-650 - Cookie (matte light brown)
- I-528 - Pearl (iridescent frosty light champagne)
- I-648 - Golden Fawn (iridescent champagne gold)
- S-814 - Light Rosewood (satin dusty rose)
- ME-728 - Copper Red (metallic deep copper)
- ME-612 - Silver Brown (metallic light mauve taupe)
- M-608 - Red Brown (matte deep brown)

Get a discount when you purchase two or more Artist Color Shadows with a magnetic palette at Sephora:
- 2 Shadows Palette C$37 / US$29 (C$46 value / US$36 value)
- 3 Shadows Palette C$50 / US$39 (C$68 value / US$53 value)
- 4 Shadows Palette C$63 / US$49 (C$90 value / US$70 value)
- 6 Shadows Palette C$77 / US$59 (C$134 value / US$104 value)
While these shadows are already quite pigmented to begin with, applying the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Eye & Lip Primer underneath makes them pop even more! The formula comes out as a cream shade out of the tube but goes on clear once spread on the lids and helps smooth out uneven texture, such as from fine lines and imperfections. Think of it as a blank canvas for your eyes that will make colours appear ultra vibrant. On the lips, it feels like a light, non-sticky and slightly oily lip balm and helps prolong wear time, smoothes out lip lines and boosts pigmentation for products applied on top. It is best applied with fingertips, concentrating a small amount at the center of the lips/lids and then working your way out. Below you can see the before (no primer) and after (with primer) of swatches of the Artist Color Shadow in S-814.

I personally find the new Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadows to be just as good as the original Artist Shadows, so if you have never tried them, you won't be disappointed by these. See them in action here!
