I was first introduced to Maison Jacynthe a couple of years ago when I got to try out some of their skin care products and last year also tested out a handful of their makeup products, and I have been in love ever since! Created by Jacynthe René, a Québec-based health and natural wellness guru, actress and author, among many other talents, her natural line of toxin-free products is also vegan and cruelty-free. Now, I love supporting natural beauty brands, and the fact that Maison Jacynthe is local makes me even more of a fan. I recently got to try out a few of her more recent launches, namely her Fluid Foundation, Highlighter, Nail Polish and Perfume, and am here to report back on how I have been getting along with them.
I picked out the Maison Jacynthe Fluid Foundation* ($46) in shade Sable 02. This one is more yellow toned, which matches well with my summer tanned skin. Housed in a chic glass bottle and featuring an application wand, this water-based liquid foundation is medium coverage with a natural finish and can be layered with ease. It blends like a dream when using a flat brush and feels like second skin to the touch as it also contains moisturizing ingredients. I have been a big fan of natural pressed powders but haven't had much luck finding a natural liquid foundation that I like and would recommend, but this one has simply knocked my socks off. With a light dusting of setting powder, it lasts all day and does not make me shiny in my T-zone, which is where I tend to get oily. Made with coffee seed oil, borage oil, vitamin E, glycerin, linalool, citronellol and limonene among other extracts, you can just imagine how nice it smells too!
The Maison Jacynthe Highlighter in 01 Soleil Pétillant* ($33) is a striking illuminator that will make you glow to the stars. Super buttery and pigmented, it's important to go with a light dusting using a fan brush or gently tap some on with your fingertips on the high points of your face. Made from a mica and corn starch base, it has a lovely nutty and sweet scent thanks to key extracts including coffee seed oil, babassu seed oil, apricot kernel oil, shea butter, avocado oil and macadamia seed oil. Despite being quite shimmery with a golden undertone, it still works well with my lighter complexion, stays put and does not flake throughout the day.
Above are swatches of the fluid foundation (left) and highlighter (right). As you can see, shade Sable 02 looks quite dark on my arm, but blends in nicely on my face, as shown in the after shot below.
Left: Before (no makeup) | Right: Wearing the Fluid Foundation and Highlighter on the tip of my nose, cupid's bow and cheek bones |
With fall being right around the corner, I've been gravitating toward darker colours, and I already know the Maison Jacynthe Nail Polish in Panarea* ($14) will be my new go to when it comes to my nails. A taupe and cocoa hybrid, this nail varnish is void of ten of the top toxins found in the majority of polish formulas and is between 75% to 80% of natural origin. It is quite opaque and you could definitely get away with just one coat. The formula isn't the most long lasting as I experienced chipping after a couple of days despite applying both a clear base and top coat, but then again I still have yet to come across a lacquer that stays put without chips for longer than three days.
Maison Jacynthe has also come out with their own line of fragrances, and I received their Vingt-Deux Roll On Perfume* ($50). If there is one thing I am obsessed with at the moment, it would be perfume oils. I have a small but well-loved collection, and Vingt-Deux is unlike anything I own. The scent is very mature: floral and spicy with an oriental and romantic twist. It actually reminds me of a perfume my mom used to wear when I was a little girl called Chantilly by Dana. The top notes of this perfume oil are bergamot, cardamom, pink bay and rum, the middle notes are peony, geranium rosat and ylang-ylang and the base notes are maple, benzoin, vanilla and labdanum. Free of GMOs, silicone, parabens, colorants and synthetic fragrances and made almost exclusively with organic essential oils, this perfume not only wraps you in an invisible veil of delightfully scented plant extracts, but is also super safe to use on the skin.
Once again, I cannot express enough how much I admire all aspects of Maison Jacynthe. From the inspirational founder behind the brand, to their mission to create products that respect both nature and the body without causing harm, this is one of my all-time favourite beauty lines out there, hands down.
