Seeing Periods In A New Light: Lunette Menstrual Cup | Review + Giveaway

Lunette Menstrual Cup

Periods. Now that is a word I never thought I would be mentioning in a blog post, but yes ladies (and gents?), I am going there because today's post is all about periods, or should I say, how to make periods less of a hassle with the Lunette menstrual cup. I had never tried a menstrual cup up until giving this one a go just a few months ago, but it is something I had been considering for over a year now. I kept reading (and hearing) about how menstrual cups were revolutionizing the way us women cope with 'that time of the month', so I was super thankful when Lunette asked me if I would like to share my experience after using their menstrual cup as well as offer one of my readers the chance to win one for themselves, so keep on reading to find out how you can enter!

Lunette Menstrual Cup

How to choose your menstrual cup:

The Lunette menstrual cup* comes in 2 sizes: Model 1 and Model 2. Model 1 is made of a softer silicone material than model 2 and is suitable for virgins, teenagers, women who have not given birth, have a short vagina, are physically active and who have a sensitive bladder. Model 2 is generally best for women who have given birth. You can consult this sizing chart to evaluate which one would work best for you. The Lunette cup is also available in a variety of fun colours, and I went for Model 1 in shade coral.

What are the benefits of using a menstrual cup?

- Reusable = less waste = good for the planet
- Convenient: you only need to empty your cup 2-4 times per day, meaning less time is spent worrying about having to use the restroom!
- Budget-friendly: save hundreds of dollars as you no longer have to buy pads, pantyliners, tampons, etc. - you only need to replace your cup after several years or if damaged
- Worry-free when it comes to leakage (and odour!) since the cup forms a tight seal when properly inserted
- Can be used overnight for up to 12 hours - empty it beforehand and you are good to sleep!
- Safe: the cup (including the coloured versions) is naturally hygienic as it is made from medical grade silicone (making it vegan) and is also toxin-free
- Easy to wash and store (comes with a pouch)

How do I insert the Lunette menstrual cup?

Like many, my initial thought was "how in the world is this going to fit inside my vagina?" Fear not, as you actually have to fold the cup to get it in, after which it releases, unfolds and forms a tight seal held by your vaginal wall and muscles - you many have noticed the little air holes located near the rim for that purpose. Our bodies are all different, so finding the best insertion method for you will take some experimenting. Squatting will loosen your vaginal muscles, making it easier to insert. I find that the punch down fold works best for me, but other common methods are the C-fold and triangle fold (see demos here). There are many more folds you can try out as well if those don't work for you (see here). Don't get frustrated if you are having a hard time finding what works best from the start - I couldn't get the cup in on the first day after giving the C-fold a shot, so I tried again the following day with the punch down method and hooray, I was good to go!

How do I remove the Lunette menstrual cup?

To break the seal, place your fingers at the base of the cup, not just the stem, and pinch - you will feel it release. Then, gently wiggle it out by pulling down. Be careful, as you don't want to spill its contents all over. Once you have removed it, spill the liquid out into the toilet bowl, rinse first with cold water to prevent staining and then warm soapy water (use a mild, perfume-free soap), and insert back in if needed. If you are not near a sink, wiping it with toiler paper or a wipe (such as the Lunette Cup Wipes) will suffice until you are able to properly clean it later on in the day.

How do I clean the Lunette menstrual cup?

It is recommended you clean your menstrual cup with mild soap before first use and then boil it for 20 minutes in a large pot of water, as it will not only kill any bacteria but also make it more malleable. Make sure to give it a good rinse in between insertions, and give it a deep clean with the Lunette Feelbetter Menstual Cup Cleanser or a natural disinfecting soap at the beginning and end of your period. Storing it in the provided bag will ensure it is properly ventilated (keeping it in a plastic bag or container is not recommended).

Lunette Menstrual Cup

I have been using the Lunette menstrual cup for three full cycles now, and although there was some frustration involved at first, it has been smooth sailing since! If you have been considering trying a menstrual cup, I cannot recommend it enough - you will see your period in a whole new light!

  13. Honestly, I appreciate that it's environmentally friendly and easy to use. I don't think a lot of women can use this, especially if they're a little too young and just started getting period but it's definitely perfect for more mature women.
