Surya Brasil Natural Hair Care | Review

Surya Brazil Amazonia Preciosa Murumuru Hair Care

I've been lucky to have discovered many natural hair care lines that have worked well for my hair - I know from reading various blogs and from personal experience that it can be quite hard to find a natural line that won't leave your hair looking limp and feeling greasy since many of them are oil-based. The last few collections I've tried have been a hit, so I thought I would share my experience with the Surya Brasil vegan hair care line, which has on the other hand left me feeling slightly disappointed. My hair got along with one of the three products, so I'll be going into detail about what worked and what didn't work as well on my mane.

Surya Brazil Amazonia Preciosa Murumuru Shampoo Conditioner

Starting off with the good, my hair responded really well to the Amazonia Preciosa Murumuru Shampoo* (US$25.00, 300 mL). The consistency is almost that of jello, which I found really intriguing. Since this product is sulfate free, it does not foam, meaning I find myself reaching for a bit more product to achieve a deep cleanse. Murumuru is actually the fruit of a palm tree native to the Amazon forest in Brazil from which butter is made. Other ingredients include: aloe leaf juice (which would explain the gelatin-like texture), Cumaru extract and Preciosa tree essential oil. After rinsing, my hair feels pretty clean and smells very nice, a mixture between nutty and what I would describe as a vanilla scent.

The Amazonia Preciosa Murumuru Conditioner* (US$25.00, 300 mL) didn't perform as well as I had hoped. At first use, the product came out runny and separated (visualize a bottle of mustard you forgot to shake before use). I thought maybe I had received a bad batch, but I figured I would shake the bottle for about 15 seconds to see what happened - and the product then came out more creamy, which was a relief. It has a similar scent to the shampoo, which I really like. However, upon rinsing and air drying my hair, my locks felt very stiff and looked flat and a bit greasy. Unfortunately, this conditioner isn't the best for my wavy hair.

Surya Brazil Amazonia Preciosa Murumuru Treatment Hair Mask

The Amazonia Preciosa Murumuru Treatment Hair Mask* (US$20, 120 g) is meant for oily hair types, and despite having normal hair, it still made my hair greasy. The instructions suggest to leave it in for 10 to 15 minutes, but after about 3 minutes I had to rinse it out because I felt my scalp becoming abnormally oily. Granted, I tried it for the first time following their conditioner so I gave it a second chance the following wash, going straight from shampoo to hair mask - alas, my hair still didn't respond too well. I thought maybe I just didn't rinse the product out well enough, but again I think it just wasn't meant to be.

  1. It's too bad that these didn't work (or two of the three) because it sounds like they smelled lovely.
