Does Oil Pulling Really Work? | Benefits + Perla Coco Review
I have already professed my love for coconut oil a few times in the past and even dedicated an entire post to the benefits of using it on your hair here. I've always been intrigued by the practice of oil pulling for oral health and have done it in the last year, although inconsistently. Since it is recommended to do it every morning for 15 minutes before eating and I'm usually in a rush to catch the bus for work, I just haven't been good about it lately. I was recently introduced to the brand Perla Coco - they offer oil cleansing packs to improve dental and gum health. I wanted to see if it was any different from using plain coconut oil. I received their 2 Week Plan Oil Pulling Pack* and challenged myself to oil pull daily for 14 days straight.
How exactly does oil pulling give you a healthier smile you ask? Swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth is actually more appealing than it sounds, trust me! The feeling and taste is odd at first, but once you are done you immediately notice how smooth and clean your teeth have become. Coconut oil has antibacterial properties and helps lift the dirt that hides deep within the gums and pores of your teeth. If you really think about it, it makes sense since the swishing motion creates suction and therefore picks up all that gunk that brushing and flossing often leave behind. I've switched my oral hygiene routine to being all natural almost a year and a half ago around the same time I transitioned to eating 100% plant-based, and my teeth have never been healthier or looked better (my last visit to the dentist proved this as I got a clean bill of health and no cavities).
Whiter teeth is one of the many reasons I started oil pulling and although I haven't had dramatic results from doing it, they are still much whiter than they used to be. Other benefits include fresher breath, cavity, plaque and gingivitis prevention, a stronger jaw, relief of inflammation and of a sore/dry throat, boosting the immune system and even preventing heart disease. Not to mention this practice is all natural. The key is that you do not swallow the oil once you are done pulling, but spit it in the garbage (since you don't want to clog the drain).
Should you buy the Perla Coco mint flavoured pack? I will say it is convenient when travelling because you get single use packs, but if you want to get the most value for your mula (the 2 week pack costs nearly US$25!) I say just get a tub of coconut oil. I usually get mine on sale from the health food store for about $10 and it lasts me for months. Just make sure that the oil is organic, unrefined and cold pressed for best results.
Have you tried or considered oil pulling?
